Project Success Enrichment: Language Arts Manual. Introductory Unit & Bibliography.
This manual is intended for use by teachers using the Project Success Enrichment (PSE) program to teach language arts to elementary school students. An introduction outlines the teacher training component of the PSE, the language arts organizational model used, the curriculum sequence, and definitions of different types of expository writing. The program's focus on giving students experiences in both poetry and short story writing while developing basic skills, including vocabulary, imagery, sentence structure, theme, and format, is also discussed. Academic and ability development objectives such as self-management, social skills, and thinking skills are identified. A chart matches the cognitive domains of knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation to specific terminal behaviors. Individual sections then explore curriculum components including word and sentence expansion, imagery, patterns in poetry, descriptive paragraphs, fantasy and adventure stories, and drafting and revising skills. Typically included in each section are lesson plans, grade level adaptations, extended activities, examples, and evaluation suggestions. An extensive bibliography includes a listing of Newbery award winning books; magazines for children; literature listed and referenced to PSE content and themes, including a section of selections for a Native American unit; and literature for enrichment in grades K-3. (Contains 48 references for teachers.) (DB)
