Effective government relations is the key to meeting the fiscal and legislative needs of public education. This fastback is designed to help educators establish an effective government-relations program. It offers suggestions for identifying legislative priorities; forming internal and external networks and coalitions in support of the legislative priorities; and shaping opinion and exerting influence with decision makers to achieve legislative priorities. The first chapter describes the publics, guidelines, and process of government relations. Chapter 2 discusses the issues of and the implications for the role of government in public education. The third chapter describes a four-step planning process for effective leadership in government relations. Communication tools to help form successful government relations are discussed in the fourth chapter. Chapter 5 provides strategies for maintaining effective government relations at the federal level. The final chapter explores ethical issues in government relations. (LMI)
