Multicultural Counseling in Schools: A Synergetic Approach.

As the percentage of ethnic minority students in schools continues to increase, school counselors and counselors-in-training must broaden their cultural knowledge base and develop new strategies that are responsive to the complex challenges these students face. This text provides direction for working within the ethnic minority student's worldview and identifies synergetic and developmental interventions that meet their needs. The book combines the themes of: (1) the relation of changing demographics to socioeconomic and psycheducational imperatives in schools; (2) the balance between universalism and cultural pluralism within schools; (3) the resilience and adaptation of ethnic and cultural student groups; and (4) the ethnic and cultural status as stressors on the normal development of youth. Each chapter concludes with experiential activities that inspire ideas on how to ensure a multicultural environment in schools.
