This report describes the methods and procedures used for the 1994 third followup of the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 eighth graders (NELS:88/94). NELS:88/94 collected information on postsecondary education participation, employment, earnings, family formation, and other activities and experiences relevant to individuals as they are about to enter their adult lives. NELS:88/94 contains information on several nationally representative samples, including 1988 eighth graders, 1990 tenth graders, and 1992 twelfth graders enrolled in public or private schools. Information is presented about survey design and preparation, data collection, data production statistics, quality assurance, and statistical quality control. Weights, standard errors, design effects, nonresponse rates, data quality, and composite variables are also discussed. Three appendixes present the code for the survey instrument and the agendas for interviewer and locator training sessions. (Contains 6 exhibits and 47 tables.) (SLD)
