Discovering the Talents of Rural and/or Economically Disadvantaged Gifted Students. Project Discovery Technical Assistance Handbook.

This technical assistance handbook contains information on identifying Kentucky gifted students, including gifted students who live in rural areas or who are economically disadvantaged. Included in the handbook are: (1) recommendations for ensuring equity in the identification and assessment process; (2) a draft of a school district policy on identification procedures; (3) definitions of giftedness listed in state regulations; (4) a chart showing recommended procedures for informal primary talent pool identification; (5) a chart showing recommended procedures for formal identification of grade 4-12 students; (6) charts providing information on assessment instruments for measuring general intellectual aptitude, behavior characteristics and creative behaviors, general and specific academic achievement, and self-concept; and (7) suggestions for teacher identification of gifted students. Appendices, which make up the bulk of the document, include surveys for adult community members, parents, and teachers to identify gifted students; suggestions for parents in developing their child's gifts; a primary portfolio talent guide for portfolio assessment; a table showing the characteristics of rural gifted students and disadvantaged rural gifted students; behavior rating instruments; an outline for curriculum differentiation in different content areas; and a description of standardized instruments used in the identification of gifted students.
