Directory of Qualified Interpreters for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Virginia State Dept. for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Richmond.
This directory lists over 200 interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing in Virginia who have passed either national certification or state level screening. Introductory material first lists services provided by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and then offers guidelines which address: what an interpreter is; how to select an interpreter; the qualifications currently recognized in Virginia; how to use an interpreter; the Code of Ethics for interpreters; and the cued speech transliterator code of conduct. It details the specific certificates offered by the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Levels (VQAS) which offer awards at four levels of proficiency. The directory lists the nationally certified interpreters first and then the VQAS-qualified interpreters, providing name, address, telephone number, specific credentials, availability, and regions served in Virginia (a map is provided).
