Talk It Out: Conflict Resolution in the Elementary Classroom.
The "Talk It Out" approach is presented for use by elementary school teachers. Talk It Out employs the techniques of conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation in order to resolve problems that occur in most classrooms, such as teasing, put-downs, pushing, hitting, cheating, gossiping and refusing to share. Readers are provided classroom anecdotes which illustrate the use and effectiveness of Talk It Out. Chapter titles are: (1) How Talk It Out Was Developed; (2) Guiding Children through the Process; (3) Creating the Conflict Corner; (4) On-the-Spot Problem Solving; (5) Moving toward Independent Problem Solving; (6) The Class Meeting Option; (7) Peers as Peacemakers; (8) When You and a Student Talk It Out; (9) When It's Time to Take Over; (10) Fine Tuning to Match the Child and the Moment; (11) Problem Solving Isn't the Only Way; and (12) Toward a Talk It Out School. Thirteen appendixes present practical tips, lesson plans, step-by-step scripts, and other materials that will be useful in introducing conflict resolution skills and helping students internalize them.
