Through interviews with farmers, agricultural experts, and students, this video raises student's awareness of sustainable development issues in modern agriculture and food production. The video explores the following themes: agriculture and sustainable development, different approaches to farming, evaluation of farming practices in the context of sustainable development, and the effect of consumers on trends in food production. The accompanying teaching guide contains the following lessons: (1) A Brief Agricultural Historical Perspective and a Definition of Sustainable Development, (2) Soil--A Key Agricultural Resource, (3) Agriculture and Chemicals, (4) What is the Real Cost of Food?, and (5) Everything is Connected. The video opens discussion on a number of topics including the problems of soil depletion and degradation, the debate over the use of chemical solutions, the dependence on non-renewable resources to grow food, and the health of the farm economy and the way consumers influence agricultural practices.
