This book offers 80 original chants for teaching children to play with language, discover their ownership of language, and experiment with language. The book states that chants can provide a strategy that develops reading skills, ease in dramatic situations, sidebars in art work, communication abilities, awareness of self and environment, and skills in cooperation. Chants are divided in the book into sections on: (1) Rhythm and Rhymes; (2) Your Own Space; (3) Food Follies; (4) A Fable for Everyone; (5) Fantasy and Fun; (6) Special Times; and (7) Places to Be; each section contains activities suggestions for many of the chants. The book offers advice on methods for children's participation, including drawings, mime actions, music, chanting in parts, conga lines, and the use of puppets. (CR)
