Teaching with Heart. Making Healthy Connections with Students.
Deiro, Judith A.
This book provides teachers with a rationale and specific suggestions for building trusting relationships with students. For teacher educators, it provides a conceptual framework for teachers' nurturing behavior. It discusses skills, knowledge, and sensitivities necessary to make healthy teacher-student connections and provides curriculum components to include in teacher training to enhance these nurturing skills. The book also provides useful information for educational administrators and prevention specialists who work with schools. Chapter 1 discusses the importance and value of developing close relationships with students for their overall healthy development. Chapter 2 presents the strategies used by six nurturing teachers to form such relationships with their students. Chapter 3 illustrates the attitude needed to encourage student openness to a teacher's caring--treating students with dignity and respect. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 discuss the personal and workplace resources that nurturing teachers use to revitalize their professional energy, and identify personal characteristics that enhance competence and engender trust. Chapter 7 summarizes the findings of the research and addresses teacher and administrator concerns with the ideas presented here. (Contains 78 references.) (CK)
