Topical Synthesis #8, "Community-Based Learning: A Foundation for Meaningful Educational Reform" (Thomas R. Snapshot #37, "Providing Integrated Services in an Inner-City School" (Joan Shaughnessy), relates how a small inner-city public elementary school--the Family Academy, New York, New York--designed an approach that successfully integrated social services with academic learning. Snapshot #38, "Integrating Middle School Curriculum around Real-World Issues" (James W. Kushman) describes how Waldo Middle School in Salem, Oregon, integrated middle-school curriculum around real-world issues. Snapshot #39, "Improving Elementary School Climate" (Kathleen Cotton), describes how Bonneville Elementary School in Pocatello, Idaho improved its school climate. Snapshot #40, "Leading an Inner-City School to 'Overall Excellence'" (Kathleen Cotton), describes how an inner-city school--the Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in Seattle, Washington--received national recognition for overall excellence through the leadership of the principal and key staff members.
