Classroom 2061: Activity-Based Assessments in Science Integrated with Mathematics and Language Arts.
Hammerman, Elizabeth; Musial, Diann
This book contains a set of authentic performance assessments that offer students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and multiple science abilities through communication, problem solving, inventiveness, persistence, and curiosity. The specific knowledge and science abilities are drawn from those identified in Benchmarks for Science Literacy and other national standards for science and mathematics. Chapter 1 deals with science literacy, concept understanding, process skills, habits of mind, science-technology-society connections, and methods for teaching science. Chapter 2 discusses mathematical literacy and understanding, process skills, mathematics tools and techniques, communication skills, and implications for assessment in mathematics and language arts. Chapter 3 deals with the development of scoring rubrics for performance assessment including holistic scoring rubrics, generalized scoring rubrics, and analytic scoring rubrics. Chapter 4 offers a step-by-step analysis of each component of a prototypic performance assessment and discusses the design of integrated performance assessments. The prototypic performance assessments that comprise chapters 5 through 13 provide a variety of ways to assess students' concept understanding, process skill acquisition, habits of mind, and ability to make real-world connections. Contains five pages of references. (JRH)
