Home Learning Enablers and Other Helps: Ages 4 to 36 Months. Infant-Toddler HLE Manual.
Early Childhood Education Administration Inst., Rockville, MD.
To ensure a lasting effect of the efforts made in early childhood programs, this manual provides specific, sequential curriculum-related activities for parents to use with infants and toddlers at home. Activities have been differentiated for the following three age groups: (1) 4 to 12 months; (2) 12 to 24 months; and (3) 24 to 36 months. The description of each activity outlines the purpose for activity, the materials needed, the duration of the activity, how it is to be performed, the method for evaluating the activity's effect, and ideas for making the activity simpler for younger children and more challenging for older children. The evaluation of the activities focuses on whether the child experiences joy and pride in doing the activity. The various skills emphasized by the activities are listening, observation, eye-hand coordination, vocabulary, large and small muscle development, and problem-solving. A letter to the parent from the teacher along with a feedback sheet are provided. The manual also includes papers which discuss understanding 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds, and the importance of talking and reading to young children to help them develop their language. (BAC)
