Use of Authentic Assessment with ABE Students.

This report describes a project that developed a formal process and the accompanying instruments for authentic assessment of the academic and life skills of adult basic education (ABE) students. The assessment was used to assess the skills of 50 ABE students. The students and teacher evaluated the work that was done, the results were compiled, a master checklist was created, and the findings were analyzed. Results were compiled on a master spreadsheet with reference to the average measured skill level for each student and the average measured skill level for each measured task. The measurement worked better with the learners at a lower academic skill level, although many higher-level students found some tasks challenging. The 11-page report is followed by the assessment, including a complete table of contents, checklists, and all items necessary to complete the assessment. Tasks include the following: personal information; counting money and making change; voter registration; income tax forms; alphabetizing; calendar; using maps; map reading; informal notes, friendly letters, and business letters; postage; employment applications; shopping; medical history; application for social security card; telephone skills; catalog order; time sheet; measurement; and newspaper.
