Covering the Campus: The History of the Chronicle of Higher Education, 1966-1993.
This book examines the first 25 years of "The Chronicle of Higher Education," the weekly newspaper of academe founded in 1966 by Corbin Gwaltney. It examines the origins of the publication in the 1958 "Moonshooter Report," a supplement for alumni magazines put together by Gwaltney, entitled "U.S. Higher Education in 1958," and then traces its development from a biweekly, eight-page newsletter supported by foundation grants to a nearly hundred-page, self-supporting higher education weekly. The book goes on to examine how "The Chronicle" has covered various campus issues, as well as the publication's editorial and production processes, layout, business practices, international coverage, and recent ventures onto the Internet. It concludes by discussing the legacy of Gwaltney and the influence of his publication on American higher education. Four appendixes provide a timeline, a list of interview subjects, and a list of employees and foreign correspondents. (Contains approximately 240 references.) (MDM)
