When English Is the Foreign Language.
Mosher, Joyce Devlin
This document, divided in two parts, provides a review of current methods of second language acquisition, offers a step-by-step teaching methodology for effective communication in multilingual settings, and helps teachers develop strategies for integrating language and content instruction in the English-as-a-Second-Language classroom. The guide suggests that second language teachers should communicate, facilitate socialization, and provide language instruction. With these goals in mind and aimed directly at the teacher, this teacher's guide outlines and defines how to assess the child, communicate participation structures, present appropriate content material, and encourage second language practice. Both school and home environments are discussed. Ideas presented address the adjustments that students and teachers can make to create a learning environment in which language learners can participate as active learners. (Contains 14 references.)
