The Principal: Leadership for the Effective and Productive School.
Bookbinder, Robert M.
This book synthesizes research findings on principal effectiveness, viewing the principal as a key factor in ensuring school effectiveness and productivity. Methodology includes an extensive literature review, participation and observation grounded in theory, and pragmatic responses to conditions and issues. Chapter 1 presents an overview of research and theory on effective leadership. Chapter 2 focuses on the principal's instructional leadership role, a major contributor to educational excellence and school productivity. The third chapter describes the principal's managerial role and discusses various management techniques that improve school effectiveness. Organizational theories that describe how organizations evolve and the factors for success are discussed in the fourth chapter. Chapter 5 presents theoretical and practical aspects of human-resource management. The final chapter describes how the principal responds proactively to challenges posed by the environment external to the school. References and discussion questions accompany each chapter. A glossary and 22 figures are included. Appendices contain sample policy statements regarding the selection of and complaints about instructional materials; teacher evaluation and induction programs; drug and alcohol use; and moral and ethical values. (Contains 358 references.) (LMI)
