This resource book provides specific strategies and activities for integrating middle grade elementary multicultural studies with 34 related children's literature selections. This book addresses current trends in education: multicultural studies and understanding, the whole language movement, and the emphasis on integrating curriculum areas. This book includes literature selections from the following areas of the world: Africa; Asia; Caribbean; Central America; Europe; Middle East; North America; South America; and South Pacific. Each selection contains descriptions of picture books and novels, along with a variety of follow-up activities with supporting projects and pattern pages. An extensive bibliography and map of the area also are provided for each section. Follow-up activities extend and reinforce both the literature and the cultural concepts by using various forms of expressions. The goal of this book is to improve instruction in the middle grade classrooms by blending multicultural studies and literature, providing hands-on activities that can easily be implemented, and sparking children's interest in other cultures.
