These proceedings are the record of the presentations and deliberations of a 1993 Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) sponsored conference. The speakers at this conference provided insights into the conditions of disability explanations of the intent and the detail of the law, and techniques for meeting the needs of library users with disabilities. Chaper 1 emphasizes a need for awareness, common sense, and good faith when dealing with accessibility standards. The structure of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is described in chapter 2. Chapter 3 examines issues of building design and chapter 4 focuses on historic properties and the ADA. Chapters 5 and 6 discuss accessible seating for libraries and adaptive technology. Discussion in chapter 7 centers on patrons, assistive devices and adaptive furnishings. Chapters 8 and 9 deal with signage and safety/security considerations. Design issues are discussed in chapter 10. Appendices include questions from the audience, questions and answers about the ADA, and adaptive technology exhibitors. (Contains 96 references.) (AEF)
