It is based on a survey of 1,168 colleges and universities and 423 private elementary and secondary schools for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1994. The study found that voluntary support for higher education climbed 7.6 percent between 1993 and 1994, to $12.35 billion. Support for current operations increased 3.9 percent and support for capital purposes increased 12.3 percent between 1993 and 1994, adjusted for inflation. Contributions by alumni, nonalumni individuals, and foundations increased 11.7, 8.0, and 12.7 percent, respectively, adjusted for inflation.
