Improving the Instructional Design and Use of General Software for Practical Application with Handicapped Students. Final Report.

This final report describes a federally funded project to improve the instructional design and use of general software with students who have special learning needs. An 86-page guide, which was the project output, is provided. This "Guide for the Use of General Software with Students Who Have Special Learning Needs" is designed to help teachers make use of existing software. Its 30 lesson plans provide the basis for adapting general use software to fit the needs of students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, emotional impairments, or mental retardation. The format of the lessons includes: an overview of the activity, the types of software used in the lesson, instructional goals, student prerequisite skills, teacher preparations, steps for conducting the lessons, and follow-up activities. Each lesson also has information to help teachers decide which lessons are appropriate for use with their students. The guide also provides: a list of producers for each software product identified in the guide, a list of 69 publishers and addresses, and descriptions of agency information resources. (SW)
