Designed to introduce teachers to cooperative learning techniques in the language arts, this book presents 24 activity units--12 on outer space (including the exploration of space and its many adventures), and 12 on "inner space" (the mind, the emotions, and the brain). After an introduction and overview, the first section of the book gives teachers all the information they need to make cooperative learning part of their curriculum, including overview materials, organizational charts, instructions, blackline and reproducible masters, and advice about how to introduce cooperative learning to the students and their parents. The second section of the book presents the 24 units, each of which begins with a teacher page explaining the purpose of the unit, the skills to be applied, materials needed, suggested procedure, and processing and evaluation activities. To address the varying skill levels of students, each activity unit also includes advice on simplifying or expanding the activities. The third section provides: (1) information to help teachers set up an assessment program that will work hand-in-hand with the activities in the book; and (2) ideas for classroom publishing along with a list of eight real markets for student writing.
