This book is based on the experiences of many kindergarten teachers and explains teaching practices proven to be effective in the kindergarten classroom and the theoretical basis for them. The book consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1, "A Framework for Teaching," provides a discussion of research, chronological and behavioral age, developmental placement and self-esteem. Chapter 2, "The Kindergarten Classroom," discusses the physical organization of the classroom, parent conferences before school begins, the first day of school, scheduling, and the end of the school year. Chapter 3, "Planning and Using Unit Themes," contains information on planning, implementation, and suggested themes. Chapter 4, "A Day in Kindergarten," describes starting the day, show and tell, the calendar, discussion, worktime, outdoor play, activities in art, writing, reading, mathematics, science, and music, and fingerplays, poems, snack and game time. Chapter 5, "Building Partnerships with Other Adults," includes strategies for working with colleagues, administrators, and parents. Chapter 6, "Resources," provides information on bulletin boards, unit themes, fingerplays and activity poems, crafts, and games. Contains 45 references. (DR)
