Volunteer Programs in California Public Schools.
California State Dept. of Education, Sacramento.
Based on the premise that volunteer programs provide benefits to the educational process, this document compiles various volunteer service programs in all school districts in California. The programs submitted were rated on criteria such as: (1) the program's description; (2) the program's goal; (3) the degree to which students benefitted; (4) the nature of services provided by volunteers; (5) the degree of volunteers' integration into the educational program; and (6) the degree to which the program supported the school's educational program. Additional consideration was given to programs that supported at-risk student populations. The document describes five kinds of programs listed by type of involvement of volunteers: (1) programs involving business and industry partnerships; (2) programs involving citizen-based and community-based organizations; (3) programs involving college and university students; (4) programs involving parents; and (5) programs involving senior citizens. Each program description lists the program title, its address, contact information, and the program mission and characteristics. A list of publications available from the California State Department of Education is included. (AP)
