Let's Talk Math: Encouraging Children To Explore Ideas.
Lilburn, Pat; Rawson, Pam
This book presents mathematics activities to help children talk and write mathematically. Children are encouraged to talk about and share their ideas, to use everyday language to describe mathematical situations, and to restate problems in their own words. There are two sections in this book. Part 1 discusses the following issues and implications for classroom organization and planning: meaningful contexts for learning, understanding, language, planning, time, classroom environment, the teacher's role, classroom management, grouping, and evaluation. Part 2 introduces 40 activities and describes successful teaching approaches for each one. Mathematics content areas covered are: counting, place value, operations, fractions and decimals, pattern and order, length, perimeter, area, volume, mass, money, time, visual representation, chance, and space. The book also includes reproducible student worksheets. (MKR)
