Statement of Facts for 1979 City-Wide Mock Trial Competitions. Ex Parte in the Matter of the Petition of Darryl Bryant for Adoption. No. MT-79.
National Inst. for Citizen Education in the Law, Washington, DC.; Georgetown Univ., Washington, DC. Law Center.
Prepared by the District of Columbia Street Law Project for its eighth annual city-wide mock trial competition, this instructional handout provides material for the hearing of an adoption petition. Darryl Bryant, the husband of Angela Burns Bryant, Eric's natural mother, petitions the court to adopt Eric. George Hayes, Eric's natural father, opposes the adoption. Both claim to act in the best interests of the child. The handout clarifies the laws and explains the legal precedents. As evidence, the handout provides witness statements from Darryl and Angela Bryant, a social worker, Hayes, his mother, and Hayes' probation officer. Through participation in mock trials and analysis of the activity, students gain an insider's perspective on courtroom procedure and a basic understanding of the legal mechanism through which society resolves its disputes. Mock trials develop critical analysis, questioning and listening skills, and skills in preparing and organizing materials. (JD)
