Teaching Social Studies to the Young Child: A Research and Resource Guide.

This volume provides references to resources and research in the field of early childhood social studies education. The first five chapters address: (1) geography; (2) economics; (3) history; (4) student texts; and (5) teacher texts. Chapters 1 through 3 contain bibliographic essays that examine the basic themes of each subject area and their role in early childhood social studies education, along with annotated references of important works in the subject. Chapters 4 and 5 describe the main elements of student and teacher social studies texts and programs, examining their strengths and weaknesses. Chapter 6 summarizes the major trends in early childhood social studies education, focusing on recent initiatives of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
