Blueprints for Thinking in the Cooperative Classroom. Second Edition.
Bellanca, James; Fogarty, Robin
Based on the most comprehensive and current research in the areas of cooperative learning and cognitive instruction, this guide presents practical ideas and model lessons for encouraging cooperative learning in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. Beginning with the basics for forming cooperative learning groups, the guide outlines the steps from the introductory phase to the subsequent phases of norming, conforming, storming, performing, and re-forming. Each section of the guide covers a phase of the process, and each chapter is introduced with a background piece that defines and explains its basic concept. This descriptive section is followed by specific and necessary input for the three fully developed lessons--elementary, middle, and high school models--featured in each chapter. The lessons present practical ideas and in-depth examples. The guide verbally and graphically displays the elements that promote high-content, high-support, high-challenge lessons for all students. Three appendices offer a review of research on cooperative learning and cognitive instruction, the blackline photocopy masters introduced in each of the chapters, and most frequently asked questions about cooperative learning groups. Contains 201 references. (TJQ)
