Results of Entering Student Survey, 1993 Fall and 1994 Spring Semesters. Research Study Report.

The Blinn College (BC) Entering Student Survey was administered during the regular registration period for the fall 1993 and spring 1994 semesters. The survey was completed by students who were registering for one or more classes at the Brenham campus and the three Brazos County campuses, and who had not been enrolled during the preceding 6-year period. Survey questions focused on factors influencing students' decision to attend BC; student preferences and expectations concerning higher education; student goals; and student needs regarding the extent and sources of BC information. Survey findings, based on responses from 3,468 students to the 1993 survey and 1,721 students to the 1994 survey, included the following: (1) the top five factors that influenced students to attend BC were facilities (67%), faculty reputation (66%), academic reputation (65%), size of institution and classes (63%), and costs (61%); (2) over 40% indicated that BC was their first college choice, and 14% said that BC was their only college choice; (3) over 43% indicated that a high school counselor or teacher had been a positive influence in their decision to attend BC; (4) 74% chose small lecture and discussion classes as the preferred mode of instruction; (5) 92% expected their teachers to be well qualified; (6) 85% expected to be able to obtain help outside of class; (7) 48% expected to attend BC for only 1 year and then to transfer; (8) 34% planned to obtain a baccalaureate degree as their highest degree, while 47% planned to receive a master's degree or higher; (9) 94% felt the college catalog was a helpful source of information; and (10) the admissions office and friends attending BC were identified as other helpful sources of information.
