Allen, Christine, Ed.
This document is one of three in the "Skills for Life: Library Information Literacy" series designed to cover the entire curriculum from kindergarten through grade 12. The looseleaf notebook format allows the librarian or teacher to add material on related topics to make the resource more useful. The 53 lesson plans for the elementary grades (K-6) in this guide were contributed by librarians across the country. The introduction contains a discussion of critical thinking and the importance of library skills, as well as information on developing and using a library skills curriculum. Section 2 covers orientation of elementary-grade students to the library. Section 3 reviews using the catalog, whether card or automated. Section 4 is devoted to literature appreciation, with games and suggestions for involving students in literature. Section 5 introduces information books (nonfiction resources), while sections 6 and 7 discuss using different types of resources and research strategies, respectively. Section 8 contains a list of 60 professional resources. (SLD)
