Ethics for Professionals in Education: Perspectives for Preparation and Practice.

This book examines ethical principles governing the conduct of teachers, administrators, and other education professionals. The collection of articles, some with conflicting views, provides an overview of the many issues that define the place of ethics in professional preparation and practice. Following the introduction, "Ethics in Educational Settings," by Kenneth A. Strike and P. Lance Ternasky, part 1 lays out several alternative philosophical positions about teaching ethics to educational professionals, including a liberal, an Aristotelian, and a feminist view. The chapters include: (1) "Character and Moral Reasoning: An Aristotelian Perspective" (David C. Bricker); (2) "The Liberal Democratic Tradition and Educational Ethics" (Kenneth R. Howe); (3) "Caring: A Feminist Perspective" (Nel Noddings); and (4) "Comparing the Perspectives: A Case Analysis" (David C. Bricker, Kenneth R. Howe, Nel Noddings, Kenneth A. Strike, and P. Lance Ternasky). Parts 2 and 3 examine questions of how to include ethics in the preservice curriculum, and how a concern for ethics can be institutionalized in the schools. Chapters in part 2 are: (5) "Ethics in the Preservice Curriculum" (Barry L. Bull); (6) "Lawrence Kohlberg's Approach and the Moral Education of Education Professionals" (Dawn E. Schrader); (7) "Teaching Ethical Reasoning Using Cases" (Kenneth A. Strike); and (8) "Coping with Relativism and Absolutism" (P. Lance Ternasky). The third part contains: (9) "Discovering How You Really Teach" (Gerald Grant); (10) "Just Schools and Moral Atmosphere" (F. Clark Power); (11) "Ethics Committees and Teacher Ethics" (Betty A. Sichel); (12) "Ethical Discourse and Pluralism" (Kenneth A. Strike); (13) "Ethics and Teacher Professionalization" (C. J. B. Macmillan); and (14) "The Legal Context of Professional Ethics: Values, Standards, and Justice in Judging Teacher Conduct" (James Gross). Kenneth A. Strike and P. Lance Ternasky offer a summary and recommendations in the concluding chapter. (LMI)
