Teaching with Newbery Books: Strategies for Using Newberys across the Curriculum. Teaching Strategies.
Moen, Christine Boardman
Combining award-winning literature with effective instructional approaches, this book discusses how to select and use nearly 100 Newbery titles (representing almost one-third of the entire Newbery collection) to spark student interest and enthusiasm for reading. Chapters in the book discuss instructional approaches which include literature circles, genre studies, and author studies, as well as whole-group instruction and independent reading programs. Each discussion in the book presents strategies for using this collection of award-winning children's literature and background information on several titles. The book also includes extension activities to take students' reading further and suggestions for teachers' professional reading. The book concludes with a complete list (by author) of titles mentioned. (RS)
