Teaching with Caldecott Books: Activities across the Curriculum. Teaching Strategies.
Moen, Christine Boardman
This book employs a whole language-critical thinking approach to teaching reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking using Caldecott books (with their story-enhancing illustrations) as the literature base. The book uses 15 Caldecott books to model specific instructional strategies, critical thinking strategies, and extended language activities. At the end of each language activity in the book, additional Caldecotts are suggested for use with that particular activity. Chapters in the book are: (1) Whole Language, Whole Learning with Caldecott Books; (2) Instructional Strategies: Where Learner and Learning Meet; (3) A Three-Stage Approach to Literacy: Book Introduction, Structure Recognition, and Language Immersion; and (4) Whole Language and Thinking: The Critical Connection. Chapters 5 through 11 focus on 15 Caldecott books, not thematically grouped. The flexible grouping allows teachers to develop themes to meet their own instructional goals and the learning needs of students. (Contains 94 references.) (RS)
