Using Nonfiction in the Classroom.
Burke, Eileen M.; Glazer, Susan Mandel
Designed to introduce students to the world through nonfiction, this book presents easy-to-follow suggestions for class projects, activities, strategies, and learning centers. The book uses an integrated approach to promoting inquiry in the classroom through the use of quality nonfiction. Aimed at middle grade students and using vignettes which illustrate children and teachers using nonfiction (for example, newspapers, atlases, biographies) the book offers options to children who prefer fact to fiction. After an introduction, the five chapters in the book are: (1) Why Use Nonfiction in Your Classroom?; (2) How Will You Know Quality Nonfiction Materials When You See Them?; (3) What Environments Best Support The Use of Nonfiction?; (4) Why Read Nonfiction to Your Class?; and (5) How Will I Use Nonfiction in My Classroom? A list of nonfiction mentioned in the text concludes the book. (NKA)
