Reading and Writing Poetry: A Guide for Teachers. Grades K-4.
Steinbergh, Judith Wolinsky
This easy-to-use book addresses the needs of the teacher who has always wanted to do more with poetry in the classroom. It presents a sequence of activities that allows young children to listen to, learn, read, and write poetry--these activities have been used in dozens of classrooms and proven to be successful in a wide range of settings. Topics in the book include poetic forms, literary devices, similes, imagery, and "strong" verbs. After an introduction and a position statement, the book is divided into five parts: (1) Listening to and Learning Poems; (2) Reading and Discussing Poems; (3) Writing Poetry: Some Basic Techniques; (4) Revising and Sharing Poetry; and (5) Playing with Forms. The book concludes with an epilogue and a bibliography of recommended readings and resources for teaching poetry. (NKA)
