Encyclopedia of English Studies and Language Arts: A Project of the National Council of Teachers of English.
Purves, Alan C., Ed.; And Others
This encyclopedia is a comprehensive explanation of the study and teaching of English and language arts at all levels of education. It includes media, technology, curriculum, learning, and assessment in composition, literature, reading, drama, and language study. Designed to be used as a major resource by administrators, teachers, and students, this two-volume encyclopedia describes and discusses everything from "Abridgement" to "Young Adult." The intent of the encyclopedia is to get people to understand the nature, the history, and the organization of ideas in the field with which they are less likely to be familiar. All entries are original, ranging in length from 300 to 3,000 words. While the encyclopedia is presented in a conventional A to Z format covering kindergarten through Grade 12, there is also a topical index. Articles are divided into 11 major categories, each category edited by a recognized expert in the field. Categories are: (1) Assessment; (2) Composition; (3) Curriculum; (4) Drama; (5) General; (6) Language; (7) Learning and Teaching; (8) Literature; (9) Media; (10) Reading; and (11) Technology. All entries in the encyclopedia are brief, accessible, and up-to-date. (NKA)
