Women and Careers: Issues and Challenges.
Konek, Carol Wolfe, Ed.; Kitch, Sally L., Ed.
This book presents, in 11 chapters, results of a major survey to discover how women feel about the key issues surrounding their experiences in the workplace. The survey, conducted by the Research Group on Women and Work, was sent to 770 women in Wichita, Kansas; it received 494 responses, augmented by 238 responses to a follow-up survey 5 years later. "Career Women in Perspective" (Snyder) discusses trends in female labor force participation, occupational segregation, and career paths and describes Wichita and characteristics of the sample. "'We're All in This Alone'" (Kitch) considers career women's attitudes toward feminism. "Choosing the High Tech Path" (Brooks) explores women's perceptions of technology in their work. "Mentor" (Collison) explores how career women view their supervisory relationships. "Perceptions of Equity" (Hamrick) presents results of a study of women's satisfaction with their salaries. "Sharing Home Responsibilities" (Carlisle) suggests the phenomenon of two-earner households has not yet settled into a wholly satisfactory family pattern. "Career Women and Motherhood" (Snyder) explores child care dilemmas and choices. "Career Women's Leisure" (McCoy) provides evidence that women are working harder and playing less than male counterparts. "Is Alcoholism the Cost of Equality?" (Shore) considers career women's perceptions of the role of alcohol in their social and professional lives. "Leadership or Empowerment?" (Konek) reports that women have an nontraditional understanding of leadership and its relationship to sanctioned power. "The Future of Women and Careers" (Konek, Kitch, Shore) provides a summary of findings. Appendixes include the questionnaire, index, and notes on contributors. (YLB)
