Two Careers/One Family. The Promise of Gender Equality. Sage Series on Close Relationships.
Gilbert, Lucia Albino
This book describes the frontier of close relationships, where traditional gender roles are being reevaluated in light of what is both functional and optimal for persons in dual-career partnerships. Because social environments are crucial to understanding personal relationships and individual behavior, the three chapters in part 1 describe the societal context of young adults today. Chapter 1 explains why the dual-career family represents social change, moving beyond conventional forms of work and intimate relationships. Chapters 2 and 3 detail ways in which social learning, interpersonal ways of behaving, and social practices of institutions influence women's and men's self-concepts and choices about occupations and family life. The three chapters in part 2 address both the expectations for and realities of dual-career family life. Chapter 4 describes findings from research on college women's and men's intentions and expectations for career development, marriage, and marital partners. Chapter 5 summarizes the large, complex literature that exists on couples who have entered into dual-career relationships. Chapter 6 describes changes in workplace policies and what is known about the effects of these changes on employee well-being and corporate profit. Part 3 looks to the future. Chapter 7 anticipates what is ahead for young adults who will be partners in two-career families. Appendixes include 217 references and name and subject indexes. (YLB)
