Prelude to Performance Assessment in the Arts: Kindergarten through Grade Twelve.
Klingensmith, Bob, Ed.
Contributions by California art educators in this guide outline issues underlying performance assessment and provide examples of assessment for the arts from kindergarten through grade 12. Chapter 1 introduces art as basic to education and presents the potential of art education for all students. Chapter 2 examines performance assessment by giving definitions, examples, and standards of performance assessment. Chapter 3 describes the challenge of assessing the arts for teachers. Elements of good art assessment, the standards for assessment, assessment as good instruction, and scoring are some of the challenging areas for teachers. Chapter 4 provides two sample performance assessments in the arts. The first example, for kindergarten through grade three, is a drama using a theme of a Christmas toy shop to explore open-ended problems. The second example, for high school students, incorporates a written component that consists of gallery reviews. Chapter 5 explores the future of the Towards Arts Assessment Project (TAAP) in California. Chapter 6 discusses the national trend of assessment in the arts through the establishment of national standards for the arts and the framework under development for a proposed 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) arts assessment. A flowchart illustrates the similarities between the standards development and the NAEP framework. (CK)
