Ethnographic Evaluation of the MESA Program at a South-Central Phoenix High School.

MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) is a program designed to increase the number of underrepresented ethnic groups in professions related to mathematics, engineering, and the physical sciences. This paper describes and evaluates the MESA program at Jarama High School, Phoenix (Arizona), using informal interviews and participant observation of faculty, administrators, staff, and 14 students. Described are: the community around the school, the school setting, description of MESA at this school, MESA student dedication, MESA problem areas, recommendations for the junior high school MESA club, and recommendations.
