Many educators are concerned about the effectiveness of traditional methods of teaching science to nonmajors. This document provides a literature review of applicable research on teaching nonmajors introductory college biology, a discussion of the information gathered, and recommendations for future research. The review examines the following topics: (1) Survey of College Science Instructors; (2) Instructional Approaches to Promote Scientific Thinking; (3) Laboratory Teaching Approaches; (4) Small-Group Discussions; (5) Individually-Paced Modular Instruction; and (5) Written Materials to Enhance Instruction.
