Teaching with a Multicultural Perspective: A Practical Guide.
Davidman, Leonard; Davidman, Patricia T.
To help elementary and middle school teachers meet the challenges of today's diverse society, this guide presents a number of teacher education tools. These include a practical model of multicultural education, a set of key multicultural planning questions, and a set of curriculum case studies that illustrate how the planning questions contribute to the multiculturalization of lesson plans and units. In addition, the following guides and instruments are presented to help put multicultural education in practice: (1) the Classroom Demographic Profile; (2) the Typology of Multicultural Teaching; (3) the Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English Observation Form; and (4) the Ethnic and Cultural Self-Disclosure Inventory. For teacher educators, an introduction is provided to the various conceptions of multicultural education, which includes field-tested discussion questions and experiential activities. Seven appendixes contain background material and the evaluation instruments. Appendix 6 is an annotated list of 44 resources for equity-oriented teaching. (SLD)
