Tobacco Prevention Using Peer Leadership: Training Manual for CHAMPS.
Epps, Patricia H.; Vallenari, Alison C.
This manual includes all necessary information for implementing the CHAMPS program, which trains older elementary school students or middle/high school students to operate puppets to deliver an anti-tobacco message to fourth through sixth graders. A basic premise is that the health message will have maximum impact if it comes from a student's peers or from respected older students. The manual is divided into sections introducing the program and the kit (puppets, video tape, audio cassettes) and the Champs Tobacco Manual and including such topics as how to build a puppet stage. Following an introduction and description of needed materials are sections covering: (1) The Need: points out that tobacco prevention education is a necessity, with suggestions on how to teach the material in the primary grades; (2) The Method: includes peer led activities and grade-specific puppet scripts and supplemental materials; (3) The Puppets: covers puppeteering technique, tips for developing a good show, and advanced manipulation skills; (4) The Facts: involves in-service materials for staff and parents, materials for overhead projection, lesson plan, general facts and information about tobacco; and (5) The Results: includes program evaluation materials.
