Managing Conflict.
Williams, Francine; And Others
This package of materials is designed to provide schools with information, suggestions, and activities that can increase awareness of the nature of conflicts, conflict-resolution strategies, and the management of conflict and crisis situations. It focuses on developing a positive school climate that enhances intergroup relationships, encourages proactive recognition of potential problems, and provides suggestions for management of racial crises. The guide is organized into the following seven sections: (1) "Background (How To Manage the Inevitable)"; (2) "A Proactive Approach to Conflict Resolution"; (3) "Steps To Take to Lessen Racial Tension"; (4) "What To Do If a Racial Crisis Occurs"; (5) "Conflict Resolution Models"; (6) "Student Lessons in Teaching Conflict Management"; and (7) "Appendix," which contains suggestions for an administration's crisis response, the action-trial plan for junior high schools, and a form for successful practices in managing conflict. The guide offers some new and practical ideas to assist educators in teaching students new avenues for conflict resolution and communication and in providing a safe and orderly environment that is open to criticism, praise, and learning.
