Secondary Schools and European/International Education in Europe: Mobility, Curricula, and Examinations.

This document reports on a conference of 50 experts gathered to discuss the adaptation of education in Europe to the economic and political integration that has been occurring in that area. The conference discussed four main themes: (1) foreign language teaching and the use of the foreign language as a working language; (2) the creation of bilingual/international sections in national secondary schools; (3) the European dimension in the curriculum and in extracurricular activities; and (4) international school leaving examinations and their recognition. Recurrent themes included: (1) coordinators for policies designed to strengthen the European dimension; (2) information centers and dissemination of information, (3) regular contacts among institutions representing European international education; (4) links between European international and national school; (5) East-West contacts; (6) teacher training; and (7) teaching material. Particular issues of the conference were: (1) teaching of the first foreign language; (2) teaching of further foreign languages; (3) teaching through the medium of the first foreign language; (4) the creation of bilingual international sections in national schools; (5) new initiatives and national regulations; (6) the European international dimension in the curriculum; (7) visits and exchanges; (8) international school leaving examinations; (9) recognition throughout Europe of national school leaving qualifications; (10) recognition throughout Europe of international school leaving qualifications; and (11) use of existing institutions in the field of recognition. A summary of 18 recommendations and a list of participants is included. (DK)
