Designed to help parents and teachers think beyond the ordinary ways in which parent-family involvement in education is considered and approached, this book describes 34 operational parent-family involvement programs in preschools and in elementary, middle, and high schools. It also describes programs run by school districts and communities. Among the programs described are those that embrace Native American families on reservations, Southern families in rural isolation, Hispanic immigrant families newly arrived in California, and African American families in urban public housing developments. Each program description begins with a short profile, which is followed by a presentation of background information and a discussion of: (1) the components of the program; (2) parental involvement in planning, operating, and monitoring the program; (3) program strengths and weaknesses; (4) program outcomes and evaluation; (5) budget and funding; and (6) the name, address, and phone number of a contact person for the program. Four appendixes provide an alphabetical list of the programs cited in the book, 27 bibliographic references on parent involvement, a list of 27 parent involvement organizations, and a list of programs contacted but not included in the book.
