Customers' Views of Further Education Lecturer Training. Report to the Review Committee on the Training of Further Education College Lecturers in Scotland. Research Report Series.
This report presents the findings of a survey of 255 further education college lecturers who had successfully completed the Certificate in Education (Further Education) course at the Scottish School of Further Education (SSFE), Jordanhill, in the 5 years following the restructuring of the course in 1986. The views of 33 principals of colleges of further education on the training provision provided by SSFE are also given. The views of the college lecturers are analyzed in terms of the value of the course, effect on their own teaching, communication about the course, the teaching conducted, balance of course work between SSFE and lecturer's own college, attitudes toward block release arrangements, usefulness of mentors and support systems, and value of the Teaching Qualification (Further Education) received upon completion of the course. Views of principals are analyzed in terms of cost-effectiveness of the SSFE course, value of the teaching qualification given, appropriateness of the teaching methods, administrative arrangements, consequences of the block release nature of the course, and the colleges' influence in development of staff training.
