Children's Literature in the Elementary School. Fifth Edition.
Huck, Charlotte S.; And Others
Intended for use in classes in children's literature at the preservice and graduate levels in education or English departments and in library schools in colleges and universities, this book provides a rationale and suggestions to teachers for planning and evaluating a literature-based curriculum. The three-part organization of the book emphasizes the triple focus of the text: the reader, the book, and teaching. Twelve new "teaching features" have been included in this edition of the book, and increased attention has been paid to literature that reflects varied cultures. Chapters in the book are: (1) Valuing Literature for Children; (2) Understanding Children's Response to Literature; (3) The Changing World of Children's Books; (4) Books to Begin on; (5) Picture Storybooks; (6) Traditional Literature; (7) Modern Fantasy; (8) Poetry; (9) Contemporary Realistic Fiction; (10) Historical Fiction and Biography; (11) Informational Books; (12) Planning the Literature Program; and (13) Extending and Evaluating Children's Understanding of Literature. (A list of children's book awards, an annotated list of book selection aids, and publishers' addresses are attached.) (RS)
