Explorers and Exploration: The Best Resources for Grades 5 through 9.

This book includes a listing of literature for students that discusses explorers and exploration. The volume divides the last one thousand years into ten periods, each characterized by either geographical location or time frame. The progression is not smoothly chronological. Each chapter contains a brief narrative of the period as well as an annotated bibliography of fiction and nonfiction books on some aspect of the period. The narratives provide background for teachers and library media specialists, and motivation for further study for students. The 10 bibliographies contain a total of 230 titles, over 200 of which have been published since 1986. Most of the books are at a middle school reading level. Picture books, easy readers, or adult books listed are clearly marked as such. The first four chapters look at European based exploration to the eastward and westward and include Leif Eriksson, Columbus, Magellan, Marco Polo, and the Portuguese explorers. Chapter 5 discusses European and American expansion westward across the North American continent. The sixth chapter covers European exploration of Africa in the nineteenth century. The remaining chapters discuss exploration of the north and south poles, the highest mountains, the oceans, and space. The book is intended for use by classroom teachers in the humanities, library media specialists and librarians, and students who want to research one of the explorational topics covered.
