Head Start Parenting Education Resource Directory. Second Draft.
Trans-Management Systems, Inc.
Noting that parents are the prime educators and nurturers of their children, the Performance Standards for Head Start require staff to offer varied opportunities for parents to expand and enhance their role. This directory was developed for use as the first segment of an ongoing plan to assist local Head Start grantees in selecting the resources that will best prepare staff to work with parents. Use of this resource directory can expand staff development; enable staff to train parents effectively; offer families valuable resources which parents may not otherwise discover; and open the doors for parents to information sources for future use. Section 1 covers parenting education materials and lists sources of: (1) training materials designed to train staff and parents, such as curricula, guides, programs, and workshops; (2) books, booklets and other short pieces, magazines, and newsletters of interest to parents, including some listings primarily for staff use; and (3) audio-visual materials, such as audio tapes, broadcasts, videos, and films intended to stand alone without supporting manuals. Section 2 lists government agencies, associations, and organizations that offer materials about parenting or related concerns. Included in this section are sources of information on disabilities, health, and multicultural issues. Each entry in the directory includes a brief description with source address and phone number.
